Week 13
Lab:
This week in lab we talked about the importance taking about climate change locally. We started by talking about Iowa Goldfinch birds being in danger due to increased precipitation, humidity, and temperature. The Goldfinch leaving would impact the ecosystem's food web, affecting us. Climate change affects so much. It has lead to mismatch of birds timing their eggs hatching with bugs. No pollination = no fruit. Timing is so critical! The future of food is in big danger.
We discussed how education cares more about things like handwriting, not chewing gum, and doing what we are told. Formative assessments, coupled inquiry, and asking kids what they actually care about will move the test scores and keep us from burn out. Then we read five different articles and shared what we read with the class. We had a really good conversation over electric cars, what that would look like, and the prices of everything.
Climate is what you expect & weather is what you get.
- Climate is average of the weather over a 30 year period
- Weather is day to day
For the rest of class we looks at slides of different graphs with our tables. We looked at shocking projected realities for the future of climate.
Lecture:
In lecture this week, we discussed how it's not too late. We looked at climate change tweets, showing the 50/50 belief. Then we say the huge amount of climate articles vs articles ejecting global warming.
Why do some regions have a hot climate and others cold?
- L.O.W.E.R. Near Water
- Latitude, Ocean currents, Wind and air masses, Elevation, Relief, Near Water
Evidence of Climate Change:
- Glacier retreat
How does climate change affect sea level?
- Albedo + warm colors = more heat faster
- Sea levels are rising up and up and up
- Melting Arctic and Antartica, eliminates south of America, ocean front property in Iowa
New Orleans will sink
Water expands when it heats and cools, so heating the ocean by a fraction of a degree raises sea level
United States pulled out of the Paris Agreement! Only ones in the world because of prices.
