Week 8

Is our galaxy normal? | Astronomy.com

This week in lecture we first began with a formative assessment for our next lab section. We watched a video showing how water spins differently as it drains above, below, and on the equator (clockwise - north, counter-clockwise - south, no spin - equator). We then went over the Misconceptions Die Hard reading at our tables, switching computers with a partner. We discussed it as a class and tied it back to videos and things we have talked about.

One misconception that was corrected for me during lab was that Earth was created at the same time as the Big Bang Theory occurred. There was 9 billion years in between the two events. We discussed the Big Bang Theory and possible suns before our own. It was very mind boggling. All four groups plus Ted shared their presentations for the rest of class. Future of space travel is very interesting. As future teachers we are going to get to watch the next travel to the moon with our students.

In lab we went over information for the quiz after spring break. We talked about other alternative theories and philosophies to the creation of the universe.

1.) If you are standing on the Tropic of Cancer during the summer solstice for Iowa, what direction does your shadow point? Straight down because direct sunlight

3.) It's almost noon in Iowa. If the moon was just setting, what phase would it be? Quarter moon

Universe + Big Bang

  • 13.7 billion years Aho there was nothing and nowhere
  • Subatomic particle inflated to unimaginably huge size in a fraction of a second
  • Expansion not an explosion
  • Time and space were creation
  • Earth didn't come until later
Stars
  • Formed about 12.7 billion years ago
  • Our sun doesn't come until 4.65 billion years
  • Our sun will become a red giant and increase in mass opposite of campfire
  • Everything is star dust including us

Galxies
  • Milky Way Galaxy
  • There are 2 trillion galaxies
