The sun and the moon line up perfectly shadowing Earth momentarily

  • Demonstrated at table groups with globe, Styrofoam ball, and light bulb
- Farthest away from sun in the summer. Hmm
- Tell students the orbit is perfect circle and tilted. Not because the sun is closer!
- Historical we always thought Earth was centered and revolved around us.
  • Not religious people trying to mess with people, just all they knew and understood at the time
  • 1992 formally admitted Galileo was right and we are heliocentric
- Tropic of Cancer = north & Tropic of Capricorn = south
- Summer and winter solstice
- Iowa shadow vs Equator shadow
- Once in a blue moon = 2 full moons in one month
